Position Overview
The Iowa Medical Classification Center (IMCC) is seeking a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Psychiatrist for a 13-week locum tenens assignment supporting a combination of on-site forensic psychiatry and telepsychiatry services. This role offers a structured weekday schedule, diverse clinical exposure, and the opportunity to work within Iowa's only licensed forensic psychiatric hospital.
The psychiatrist will provide direct patient care, conduct psychiatric evaluations, and develop treatment plans for individuals within correctional and forensic behavioral-health settings. Candidates should be confident managing acute psychiatric presentations and comfortable delivering care via telepsychiatry platforms.
Assignment Structure
All five workdays are based on-site at IMCC in Coralville, with clinical responsibilities distributed as follows:
2 days: On-site care for IMCC patients
2 days: Telepsychiatry services for Clarinda Correctional Facility
1 day: Telepsychiatry services for North Central Correctional Facility
This structure provides a balanced mix of in-person forensic psychiatry and remote psychiatric care in well-supported correctional environments.
Clinical Environment
IMCC (Coralville):
Iowa's only licensed forensic psychiatric hospital
Provides inpatient psychiatric care and competency evaluations
Processes 400-500 new commitments monthly, offering broad diagnostic variety
Clarinda Correctional Facility (Tele-Psych):
Treats individuals with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and chemical dependency
Offers structured rehabilitation and cognitive-behavioral programming
North Central Correctional Facility (Tele-Psych):
Minimum-security, low-acuity population
Focus on rehabilitation, education, and reentry support
Key Responsibilities
Conduct psychiatric evaluations and ongoing assessments
Diagnose and manage acute and chronic psychiatric conditions
Develop and implement individualized treatment plans
Provide medication management and therapeutic oversight
Deliver care in both on-site and telepsychiatry settings
Collaborate with interdisciplinary medical and mental-health teams
Maintain compliance with professional, state, and federal standards
Required Qualifications
MD or DO from an accredited medical school
Completion of an ACGME-approved Psychiatry residency
Board Certified or Board Eligible (ABPN)
Active Iowa medical license (or ability to obtain)
Active DEA and DPS
Experience with acute psychiatric care
Proficiency in telepsychiatry
Ability to meet all state, federal, and facility credentialing requirements
