ERCOT is a non‑profit independent system operator responsible for the electric grid and wholesale market across most of Texas. As a System Planning Engineer, you will influence the future design and operation of the electric power grid by performing advanced steady‑state and dynamic contingency analysis, supporting system planning and operations, and driving improvement of stability studies. Responsibilities Design and conduct steady‑state and dynamic contingency analyses using power system simulation models (PSSE, VSAT, TSAT). Run scenarios, analyze study accuracy, assign confidence metrics, and prepare technical reports and presentations. Develop and refine system stability studies to determine operating limits. Review stakeholder reports, ensuring accurate technical content. Provide technical support for planning & operations, including creating tools and procedures to monitor and control the system. Coordinate with ERCOT personnel, market participants, and regulatory agencies; lead and mentor peers as needed. Act as a subject‑matter expert, making independent decisions for complex engineering issues. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (required). Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field (preferred). Experience Engineer3: Minimum 3years of progressive power‑system engineering experience beyond the degree requirement. Senior Engineer: Minimum 5years of progressive experience in the electric‑utility industry. Preferred Skills Dynamic modeling of inverter‑based resources (solar, wind, battery). Large‑scale dynamic stability analysis with TSAT, PSSE, or similar tools. Updating and validating dynamic models, including inverter‑based resources. Programming and automation of simulations using Python. Improving transmission‑planning processes and familiarity with NERC reliability standards. Controls and power‑electronics modeling (UPS, electrolyzers), PSCAD expertise, and post‑dynamic event analysis using PMU/DFR data. Experience with IEEE 2800 and EMS. Position Level The role may start at Engineer3 or Senior Engineer based on the candidate’s experience. Location The position requires on‑site work at least twice a week, with potential for additional days depending on business needs. Remote work is permitted within Texas on approved schedules.
