Casualty Underwriter Opportunity

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Casualty Underwriter to join our Central Region Casualty Team based out of our Chicago office location.

This opportunity is a great fit for an experienced Underwriter looking to expand their responsibilities and bring their underwriting knowledge to the next level, while working alongside experienced and well-regarded underwriting professionals within a top-notch insurance company.

As a Casualty underwriter, you will be responsible for expanding and developing new business opportunities through production and marketing calls with brokers and clients, marketing to distribution channels, prequalifying new business and utilizing underwriting acumen to select sound casualty risks & form opinion of risks.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and grow the Casualty book of business which includes primary general liability, umbrella, and excess liability for various classes (e.g. General Casualty, Energy, Transportation, and Products)
  • Maintain a profitable renewal book
  • Lead customer meetings for new and renewal business
  • Establish, develop, and expand retail broker and customer relationships in the Central Region
  • Work closely with loss control, actuary, claims, and legal teams to evaluate risk and provide solutions to customers
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • 3-5+ years of casualty underwriting experience (min 3 years)
  • 3-5+ years of experience with customer meetings (min 3 years)
  • Existing Marsh, WTW, Aon & Lockton relationships a plus
  • Technical underwriting skill set
  • Willingness to travel 3-4 times per quarter
  • Ability to work within a fast paced, customer focused, team environment
  • Strong communication skills including advanced negotiation and presentation experience

The base salary range for this position Chicago is $90,000 - $140,000 along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
